Mr Michael Lee OAM

Australia Day Honours List

St Mary MacKillop College warmly congratulates our Principal, Mr Michael Lee, on being awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Australia Day 2023 Honours List.

The list, which was published on Australia Day, recognised and celebrated 506 recipients of the OAM, an award presented to Australians who have demonstrated exceptional achievement or outstanding service in the community.

The citation for Mr Lee’s award was ‘For service to education’.

Mr Lee felt very honoured and humbled to have received the award, and thanked those who had contributed to his growth as an educator.

“I feel quite rare and special,” Mr Lee said.

“I’m very grateful and very proud that some people have gone to a lot of trouble to nominate me. Over my career, a lot of people have invested a lot of time, wisdom, concern, and affection in me and my growth. I’m very grateful for any interest and support anyone has ever given me.

“I think that for anyone involved in schools, particularly after the last few years in schools, any recognition is very humbling and that’s how I feel.”

The OAM not only recognised Mr Lee’s career, which has spanned more than four decades – including 25 years as a principal – but also acknowledged his work beyond the role, such as the many leadership roles he has held on boards, commissions, and associations in service of the teaching profession.

Indeed, Mr Lee’s contribution to education has previously been recognised when he was a finalist in the Australian Secondary Principal of the Year Awards in 2011 and when he was created a Fellow of both the Australian College of Educators and the Australian Council for Educational Leaders.

In a letter to the College community yesterday, Deputy Principal Mr Lachlan McNicol said Mr Lee’s contribution to the College had ‘benefitted thousands of students who have passed through MacKillop’.

“This distinguished award is a fitting recognition of a career given in service to the development others through education,” Mr McNicol said.

“I am sure you will join with me in congratulating Michael Lee OAM on this very significant honour.”

The full announcement from Mr McNicol can be seen here.

Congratulations, Mr Lee!
