The Opening Mass

St Mary MacKillop College celebrated its Opening Mass on Friday 21 February at the Tuggeranong Basketball Stadium.

More than 2000 people packed into the Stadium – one of very few places large enough to host the Mass – to witness the first visit of His Grace, the Archbishop of Canberra and Goulburn, since his Instalment last year.

Archbishop Christopher’s Homily brought an energy and a clarity to the opportunities that St Mary of the Cross MacKillop offers us in strengthening our relationship with Jesus.

The College thanks Fr Peter, Fr Lachlan, and Deacon Vince Barclay for their important contribution in concelebrating the Mass, as well as all the staff involved in the organisation of the event. The College also thanks the many visitors, including politicians, students and teachers from other schools, parents, and ex-students of the College who joined us on the day.

As is always the case, the students of the College deserve high commendation for their reverent behaviour and sincerity during what was nearly a two-hour event. The celebration of Eucharist in such a huge community setting was enhanced by the dignity and maturity that the College brought to the Mass.

Acknowledgement of Country

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop made the statement: “We are but travellers here, so while we are here we should do as much good as we can and live in peace with each other.”

With this in mind, the College respectfully acknowledges the Ngunnawal people who are the Traditional Custodians and First People of the land on which we gather each day. The College also pays its respects to the Elders past, present and emerging, and any other Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples living and working in the MacKillop community.
