Opening Mass 2017

St Mary MacKillop College celebrated the start of the 2017 school year with its Opening Mass at the Tuggeranong Basketball Stadium on Tuesday.

Well over 2,000 guests packed into the stadium, with students, staff, parents, friends, former students, politicians, and representatives from other educational institutions coming together for Eucharist.

The Mass was celebrated by Fr Warrick Tonkin from the Corpus Christi Parish, who made his first appearance at a whole-College Mass since taking over from Fr Luke Verrell as the College Chaplain. Fr Warrick was supported by Fr Lachlan Coll and Rev Vince Barclay.

The Mass helped to introduce the College’s 2017 Liturgical Theme, “Stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong.” (1 Cor 16:13)

Coordination of the Mass was a real team effort, with teachers, support staff, and students taking up roles as musicians and ministers, as well as helping with the set up, running of the Mass, and the pack up.

Congratulations to all who were involved in making the Opening Mass such a momentous occasion!

A special day for Year 12

Following their last ever Opening Mass at the College, the Class of 2017 spent the remainder of the day at the Wanniassa Campus for the Year 12 Mentoring Day.

The Year 12 students shared morning tea with their PC teachers and some of their former Wanniassa Campus teachers before heading into the Theatrette to hear from Mr Lee and guest speaker Kathryn Greiner from the Gonski Review Panel.

The highlight of the day, however, was during Period 5, during which Year 12 students visited the classrooms of Years 7-9 to share their knowledge and experiences, and where they helped the juniors with their classwork.

Acknowledgement of Country

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop made the statement: “We are but travellers here, so while we are here we should do as much good as we can and live in peace with each other.”

With this in mind, the College respectfully acknowledges the Ngunnawal people who are the Traditional Custodians and First People of the land on which we gather each day. The College also pays its respects to the Elders past, present and emerging, and any other Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples living and working in the MacKillop community.
